World Law Forum Conference on Privacy, Technology & Cybersecurity

ABOUT

Technological advancement has no doubt brought about greater connectivity, convenience and efficiency.  However, this has come at a heavy cost – our privacy. With the global rise in cyber security incidents (2017 WannaCry incident) and the recent Facebook privacy crisis, the information security policies of businesses have been increasingly under the scrutiny of the media and their users. Concerns have also been raised regarding whether businesses have adequate cyber security infrastructure in place to protect personal and sensitive information.  Cyber attacks are tangible and real and it is only a matter of “when” and not “if”In this digital age of hyper connectivity, the growing importance of privacy and cyber security is undeniable and the need for sound laws to ensure the implementation of best data protection practices is greater than ever. In addition, given the borderless nature of cyber security threats, a coordinated, cross-disciplinary and global approach to prevent and resolve cyber security matters is required. In Australia, new privacy laws – Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017 have recently come into effect on 23 February 2018 mandating notification of data breaches by corporates. On the other side of the world, a new regulation in EU law – General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has also come into effect on 25 May 2018, replacing the 1995 Data Protection Directive with the aim of protecting the data and privacy of all individuals within the European Union.
As the cyber world and reality slowly become one, privacy laws and cyber security developments are directly relevant to our everyday lives. Legal professionals and cyber security experts need to be better equipped. This conference brings together scholars and experts from multi-disciplines to examine ways for the legal profession to collaborate with other fields to build a safe and secure cyber world.
